“Karen,
We
have now had our little puppy for a week and we could not be happier.
We tried several Cherokee names but that language is so soft in its sound
that none of the words we wanted to use seemed to make a good name.
So, we decided to stay with English and call him Little Wolf, which gets
shortened to Wolf most of the time already.
I must say I was expecting a smaller puppy
at 9 weeks. I have had German Shepard's and Labs that were not
as big at 9 weeks as Little Wolf was. If he goes to 80+ pounds
at full grown and his feet grow in proportion, he will have ping pong
paddles for feet.
I
had a couple questions about your facilities because of what Little Wolf
has or is doing now. Did
he start out in a crate like environment? I had not planned
to crate train him but when a friend offered me one we decided to try
it. I took about ten seconds to get him happily inside. From
thnm on he uses the crate for naps and bed time. In fact, we moved
his crate from the living room to the laundry room at night for his bed
room. When it is bed time he happily goes into the crate with all
his toys and smiles as we carry him in his crate to the laundry room.
If he did not have a crate like environment when he was born, I am not
sure why he went so quickly into the crate and was so comfortable with it
from the beginning.
Do
your facilities have anything that acts like a pet door - a loose flap
over an opening for the dog to go through at will?
We had one installed from the hall way out to the patio when we built the
house. My wife showed Little Wolf the door and how it worked.
She held up the flap for him to go out once and then in once. After
that he uses it on his own like he was born to it. In fact, he gets a
little mad if we have to close the door so he can not get through the flap
when he wants too.
Did you use any flea and tick repellent on
the puppies before you let them ship out? With
his very thick under coat, is there any type or brand that you would
recommend? He
spends time in the yard now and when it gets a little warmer down here, we
might start to see a few fleas in the next month or two.
Little Wolf is a very social puppy. He
is a little reserved until someone new speaks to him. Then his is
immediately very friendly. He is clearly NOT an alpha male. He
rolled over and showed us his tummy within minutes and when we play he
often will roll onto his back. When I get on the floor with him he
likes to play but has never challenged me for the dominate position.
He is still a little to excited with our cat so the two of them have not
quite got the details of who is going to be in charge worked out.
The cat is making her position on that one clear but Little Wolf does not
seem to even know what she is talking about.
Little
Wolf is very much a happy addition to our family. All the neighbors
think him beautiful and many of the local dogs welcomed him.
Your comments on the crate, doggy door and
flea medication would be greatly appreciated.

“Hi William,
Most NAIDs HATE the crate. Your
boy was in one only when he was shipped to you. As far as a
"doggy door" goes YES, all my pups are potty trained for a doggy
door, they all learn to use it and go outside to do their business,
usually by 7 weeks of age. Little Wolf has his daddy's feet!
Smokey is about a 110 lb dog, maybe more and Ota is a 94 lb female. His
personality comes from his Daddy, his brains from his Mom and his
demeanor/submissiveness/non aggressiveness is pure and simple, NAID.
That's how they all are. I am so pleased you like him.
He was a top quality boy! I kept one of his sister's for breeding.
She is solid and fuzzy, looking more like Sota Hota (Smokey). Updated pics
of him would be great!!!! :o) I do not have fleas or ticks on my
place in
Michigan
and none of my dogs ever have had such.
I guess, just ask your vet, what he or she recommends. Something
about the NAID being hypoallergenic, makes fleas not want to live on a
NAID. Ticks are blood sucking varmits, they aren't particular who
they attack. Thanks again for the update.
