Bexar & Mato - Sire~Ohapi Pui

“Good morning Karen,

I am sorry that this email is long overdue, but our lives have been so busy since we brought our boys home.  I wanted to give you a quick update on Bexar (pronounced BEX-are) and Mato (pronounced MAH-toe)--sons of Sebewa and Ohapi Pui.

The last we spoke, I explained that we were advised by a couple of trainers that our boys constant fighting and inconsolableness when separated were signs of littermate syndrome.  Since then we have been working with a trainer who has had much experience with littermates.  He has helped us identify Bexar and Mato's strengths and weaknesses and developed separate training programs for them.  So now, I am happy to say that while they are not out of the woods, they are doing so much better.  They still fight a lot, but not as extreme and aggressive--it's more like playful wrestling and they still miss each other when separated, but it is getting easier for them.

Our trainer has been great, and you are right in that these dogs take so well to training.  In fact, our trainer has remarked over and over again that he cannot believe how quickly they have progressed in the past 3-4 weeks that we have been working together.

The boys have always been able to walk with leashes--from day 1, which we understand is very unusual for puppies.  Now we are starting to teach them to walk properly by our side.  And our next lesson will be to incorporate the come, sit, and stay commands with our walks.

I must also add that they are such adorable puppies, and everywhere we take them they get so much love and attention.  Everyone wants to know their breed and where we got them.  And all feel they are two of the most beautiful dogs they have seen.  In fact, when I took them for their first vet appt a couple of weeks ago, all of the office staff gathered in the lobby to say good-bye and see them off.

Speaking of their vet appt, they were so great.  And I was so proud.  Mato didn't even flinch when he got his ddhp shot, and Bexar only gave a slight squirm.  The vet was surprised, but as I explained to him--the boys wrestle around so much that something piercing their skin is not an unusual feeling!  This week (on their 14 week BDay) we will be taking them for their rabies and other booster shots.

It is amazing to believe that they are only 14 weeks.  They have really grown so much.  On their 1st vet appt at 12 weeks, Mato weighed in at 21 lbs and Bexar 19 lbs.  So in the 4 weeks that we had them, they both gained about 7 lbs.  We am anxious to find out their weight on Wed--their next appt, because it would not surprise us if they were both pushing 30 lbs or very close to it.

Anyway, that is about all I have to report right now.  I will continue to keep you posted on their progress.  Words cannot express just how much we love these guys.  They are wonderful, adorable, loving puppies, and we look forward to watching them mature into beautiful, fun-loving dogs!

I am sorry that I haven't had a chance to send photos.  Guess it's that problem with digital cameras these days.  Taking the photos are easy...it's just finding the time to download them that is hard.  I will try to do that soon, though.  As I am sure you are anxious to see how much they have grown!

Thanks again,

Rowena Mahloch”

“Karen,

We love our boys Bexar and Mato, sons of Sebewa and Ohapi Pui, so much we can’t imagine our lives without them.  Our lives are a bit more hectic than what we had opted for but I am so glad we got two puppies.  You’re right, two pups are better than getting just one pup.  They do entertain each other and keep each other company.  It has made training them a bit harder because they hate being apart from each other, even on opposite sides of the yard.   They are so happy together and enjoy each others company so much, we often just suit there watching them wrestle and play and burst out in laughter with all the cute and adorable things that they do.

Both boys were just neutered and we were worried because a few of our friends told us about post operative difficulties their own dogs had experienced, ranging from bad reactions to the anesthesia to being given the “cold shoulder” from their dogs for a week or more after the surgical procedure.   But Bexar and Mato were amazing!  They were walking and functioning pretty much normal (albeit a bit groggy) when we picked them up from the vet.  Once we got them both home, they gave kisses as they laid their tired bodies down on the cold tile floor.  They are always very affectionate with us and every other human they meet, but it just melted our hearts that they remained caring and affectionate after their procedure.

We can’t take them anywhere without being the center of attention.  I know Bexar and Mato have not a person or a dog that they haven’t totally loved.  Of course, not everyone is a dog person, and our boys get visibly disheartened when someone doesn’t stop to pet them.  It does not happen very often though.  Our boys are so beautiful that most folks can’t resist them. There have actually been a few times during our walks when people driving have stopped their cars in the middle of the road just to get out and talk with us and pet them.

As you can tell, I can go on and on about our boys.   How great and wonderful their dispositions. .all the smart and cute things they do and how beautiful they are….But the gist of it is that Bexar and Mato have enriched our lives in ways we never thought possible!

I’ve enclosed a C-D with several photos…actually lots…as they are so photogenic.    I hope you enjoy seeing them grow as much as we have.   I will continue to update you periodically.

Thanks so much for breeding such great dogs!!  We are already talking about when we can introduce another NAID into our family!   When we figure that out, we’ll be sure to let you know.

Sincerely,  Tim and Rowena”

“Karen,
We love Coco , daughter of Sebewa and Catori. She is such an incredible dog. She is tremendously smart. For example, we bought a play pen to put in the kitchen, to keep her by the family. Very shortly she figured out how to open the pen. She has taken training to the electric fence greatly. She has an unbelievably amount of personality.  She loves to hop and jump. When Colorado gets snow she is a completely different dog. She is great and gets along with everyone (including the other dogs). We love her. Thank you so much!

“Dear Karen,
I've been meaning to write you about the puppy we got from you in September and finally am getting around to it! My husband and I really enjoyed meeting you and seeing the kennels. We were very impressed and loved all your dogs!
It was a long and uneventful drive back to
Virginia with our puppy. She whimpered and cried for a little while after we drove away from your place, then settled in. After that, she howled when we needed to stop and walk her but was quiet otherwise! We ended up naming her Kaya and she's fantastic. Everyone that's met her has fallen in love and I've given your website to a lot of people.
She's smart as a whip and as you told us when we got her- full of personality. Without a doubt, the only type of dog we'll ever get. We took her for her first real hike this past weekend, up to the highest point on the
Appalachian Trail in VA and she loved it. I've attached a couple of pictures of her- she's growing like a weed!
Hope all is well in
Michigan and thank you!

Sincerely,
Karen”

“Dear Karen,

We continue to be so thrilled that we found out about NAIDs and connected with you. Our 'little' girl Kaya, is now 7 months old, 45lbs and amazing. She learns so much every day and when she looks at me I can see her thinking. She's absolutely a problem solver, loves to be in the middle of everything and has taught my husband and me a lot about life. Although she does not get to see my husband on a daily basis (because of work), she is clearly very bonded to him- seeing him off in the mornings and waiting at the front door for him to come home from the office.
Kaya has adjusted fully to having a pack that includes cats and most days they all get along very well (every once in a while, Kaya mistakes a cat for a chew toy and gets re-educated by the cat).

Her ongoing challenge (and mine) is that she loves to dig usually in the flowerbeds that were put in last summer. From what I can tell, she's digging up bulbs, very old walnuts and charcoal from on old burn pit (circa 1930s) behind the house. She does not eat stuff once it's dug up- just rearranges it in the yard and moves to the next project! Luckily for all of us, she also loves to take showers. After a messy day outside, she heads straight for the bathroom, gets in the shower and looks at me to get in gear.

Kaya is an outgoing (not hyper) and well behaved puppy and most people are surprised to hear she's so young and hasn't been to obedience classes. She's not territorial and seems to react to others based on me- if I'm relaxed, so is she, if I'm reserved, she stands next to me and sizes up the situation. She plays with a couple of huskies (sisters) that are older than her and have been 'trained'. She's got better manners and takes charge every time. I've also watched her lie down at eye level with nervous smaller dogs (and children) and calm them down so they can play. I've had other dogs throughout my life and never have experienced anything like Kaya!  She's my hiking partner on a regular basis and never runs out of steam on the trails (although she has fallen asleep in her water bowl after). She's learning a lot about creeks and has started playing in the water and I expect she'll be swimming this summer if we get enough rain and the water is deep enough.

Although we're not ready yet, my husband and I are talking about getting another dog from you, probably starting the process next year! I've attached a picture of Kaya so you can see how she's doing.

Sincerely,
Karen Gattuso”

“Dear Karen,

I just wanted to let you know how much we love Maia!  She is the sweetest dog.  We can't imagine life without her.  Every single member of the family loves her.  Emily says she's the best dog ever.  This afternoon Emily was laying in her hammock and it came loose.  She fell to the ground and hit her head on a tree.  She's OK, but she was crying and when Maia saw what happened she came running to her and tried to help her up by pulling on her shirt.

Everyone that sees her wants to know what kind of dog she is because she is so beautiful.  She looks more and more like a wolf every day.   We tell everyone we got her from you and can't say enough about how wonderful she is.

We discovered your website because we were searching for dogs suitable for people with asthma and allergies.  I'm happy to report that none of us have had any allergic reactions or asthma symptoms.

We started puppy training classes at PetSmart and Maia is learning so quickly that even the trainer is impressed with her progress.

Thanks again for bringing us such a wonderful breed.  I've enclosed a picture from when we received her and a more recent picture.  Note how her coloring has changed.
