| Characteristics: |
Highly intelligent, very trainable,
non-dog aggressive. Great with children, small household pets, and
farm livestock. |
| Grooming: |
Little. Requires brushing only during the
once annual shedding season (in spring time). Non-shedding year
around; self cleaning (when muddy or dirty, dirt simply falls off once dog
hair coat is dry); no "doggy" odor. |
| Exercise: |
Moderate to heavy required.
This "designer breed" was bred to work.
Moderate to high energy. Breed
does best with a "job to do" or a large fenced in area, where
the NAS can play with another dog freely and at will.
When work is asked of this breed they
are "tireless" but know when to "shut it down" when in
the house, or with small children, the elderly or infirmed or riding in a vehicle. |
| Utilization: |
A very loyal and protective family companion. |
| Temperament: |
Friendly, outgoing, and very brave. Quick
movements and loud noises don't seem to bother them.
They also make an excellent S&R dog,
handicap assist, and therapy dog.
Good with other Dogs: Yes,
inherited this characteristic from the Native American Indian Dog(R).
Good with children: Excellent!
will take all kinds of abuse from the two legged "little ones"
but will seek out Mom or Dad and hide behind them when they've had enough
abuse.
Good with strangers: Never
met a shy NAS (Native American Shepherd) yet. They seem to sense
evil, or ill-intent humans and will not approach them.
|
| Life
Span: |
12 to 16 years |
| Heat/Cold Tolerance: |
Cold tolerance: high
Heat tolerance: moderate to high |
| Training: |
Highly trainable. Your "6yr old"
can teach a pup to sit, lie, stay, come, shake, down, "give me
five" in about 2 days time or less. |
| Miscellaneous Info: |
Watchdog ability: Very good
watchdogs, will lick an intruder to death, or bark at them and then grin,
will show the intruder where Mom hides her valuables and then ask the
intruder to come back and visit again.
Protection ability: Will defend and
protect humans from and any wild "critter" no matter
how large. They inherit this ability from the NAID(R) breed as
well. This ability should not be confused with a "protection
dog breed" in use for example police work.
